Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people ages 65 and over and younger people with long-term disabilities, plays a major role in the U.S. health care system.

Medicare provides health insurance coverage for more than

65 million people, nearly 20% of the U.S population – a share which will grow larger in the coming decades

Hello, I'm Paul Scallan and I have helped hundreds of families with Medicare decisions.

Each family has unique considerations, and most Medicare options have rules & exceptions.

Where you live, your health and your personal circumstances all may be a consideration in matching you with the best plan

I am Not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. government, Medicare, CMS, or Social Security. We do not offer every plan available in your area.

I attempt to be a non-biased source of information and guide your best options. No fees are ever charged to clients.

You will find resources to State & Federal websites, classes and community.

Part D - How it Works

Three Different Phases of Coverage you go through in Part D

Your Medicare Part D drug costs can change throughout the year, and it's all because of the different phases of coverage you go through.

Here's the breakdown:

Phase 1:

Deductible Period

You're responsible for the full price of your drugs until you hit your deductible.  Once you do, your plan starts chipping in. *  Keep in mind that no plan's deductible can be higher than $590 in 2025, and some plans don't have a deductible at all.

Phase 2:

Initial Coverage Period

Your plan is now helping to pay for your drugs, but you'll still have some out-of-pocket costs.  This phase ends when you reach $2,000 in total drug costs.

Phase 3:

Catastrophic Coverage

*  You've hit the $2,000 mark, and you're in the clear!  You'll pay $0 for your covered drugs.

Your Part D plan should track your progress through these phases and provide you with this information in your monthly statements.

Important note: Your plan can change the cost of your drugs during the year, but they're required to give you a heads-up.  They can't change your deductible or premium during the year, though.
